My name is Xiao Tan
I am an Assistant Professor of English at Utah State University. My current research interests include multimodal writing, second language writing, multimodal discourse analysis.
Research
My research explores how academic writing is evolving beyond the traditional text-based forms and how we can teach students to navigate and master the emerging genres in academic communication. My dissertation examines the traditional and multimodal composing processes among second language students. My recent research project investigates the integration and rhetorical functions of direct quotations in video essays.
Teaching
In my time as an instructor, I have taught language and writing courses across various educational contexts. My pedagogy is guided by the following three principles: the goal of teaching is to foster adaptive transfer; writing is a social practice involving changing conventions; equity-focused teaching leverages students’ differences as a valuable asset for learning.
